"Carolina" is a song performed by Harry Styles. It serves as the third track from Harry Styles.

Background[]

Carolina first appeared as the third track on Harry's debut album, Harry Styles. He performed the song throughout Live On Tour and Love On Tour.

Music and composition[]

Speaking to a tabloid, the friend (of Harry and Townes) revealed:

"They were set up on a blind date and it was sort of a natural thing, they really hit it off. They only met the once but both had a memorable night, so memorable that it inspired Harry to write a song about her. Townes is still spinning over it, it was a shock, such a surprise.”[1]

Townes moved to LA to study at UCLA and Harry's lyrics reveal that at one point she was pretty homesick.

Critical reception[]

Variety writer Eve Barlow stated:

"Unlike “Sign Of The Times,” you can feel a waft of relaxed Jamaican island life immediately on this jauntier, guitar-driven, rhythmic affair, which, true to title, is about a girl in Carolina (North or South is not specified). “She’s a good girl, she’s such a good girl/She feels so good,” sings Styles. Despite its simplicity, the way he wraps his voice around the phrasing completely eradicates any of that cloying awkward clumsiness possessed by Ed Sheeran – the competition for this kind of thing." [2]

HB In Retrospect opined:

"This track is one of my favorites on the album, just due to how fun and funky it is. The unconventional drums and shakers in the backtrack as well as the deep bass create a song that you just want to jam out to. The song is supposedly an ode to a girl named Townes, a UCLA student Harry met in LA, as he specifically references her name in the first verse. The ad-libs of “oh yeah” and “la la la la la” take it’s groove to the next level. (8/10)"[3]

Lyrics[]

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

She's got a family in Carolina
So far away, but she says I remind her of home
Feeling oh so far from home
She never saw herself as a west coaster
Moved all the way cause her grandma told her
"Townes, better swim before you drown"

She's a good girl
She's such a good girl
Yeah, she's a good girl
She feels so good

She's got a book for every situation
Gets into parties without invitations
How could you ever turn her down?
There's not a drink that I think could sink her
How would I tell her that she's all I think about?
Well, I guess she just found out

She's a good girl
She's such a good girl
Yeah, she's a good girl
She feels so good
She feels so good

I met her once and wrote a song about her
I wanna scream, yeah
I wanna shout it out
And I hope she hears me now

La la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la

She's a good girl
She's such a good girl
Yeah, she's a good girl
She feels so good
She feels so good
Oh, she feels so good
Yeah, make me feel so good
She's a good girl
Oh, yeah
